A. COUNCIL COMMUNICATIONS:
1. Manager: Nothing this week.
2. Upcoming Events:
• The Winton-Keane-Bittner Soccer Jamboree will be held on Sunday, September 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the newly resurfaced Cottone Field at the High School. There will also be a (NEW)
• The Keane Foundation’s Annual Town Family Picnic will be held on September 12, 2004 from 5 pm to 7 pm on the Broad Street Green. (NEW)
• Leadership Greater Hartford is hosting an evening to celebrate and recognize Hartford’s guiding lights. The Governance and Public Policy honoree is Lee Erdmann, former Town Manager. Joe Marfuggi from Riverfront Recapture is also being honored. The event will be held on September 17, 2004, beginning with a reception at 5:30 pm at the Learning Corridor Arts & Lecture Theater. There is a $20 member/$30 non-member fee to attend.
• There will be a forum on September 22nd at the Community Center at 7 PM to discuss the Metropatterns findings done by Myron Oldfield. A flyer on this event is attached.
• The annual Health Fair will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2004 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Wethersfield Ambulance Facility on Prospect Street. I have attached a flyer on this event.
• A Tri-Town YMCA Motorcycle rally that will pass through Wethersfield is tentatively scheduled for Sunday September 26, 2004. As more details are available they will be provided. (NEW)
• On September 28, 2004, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Global Companies will be hosting a grand reopening of their business at 80 Burbank Road (the former Cargill, Inc.). You are invited to attend if you wish.
• An Economic Development Summit is planned for September 29, 2004 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. More information will follow. Please save the date and time.
• On October 1, 2004, Central Connecticut State University is sponsoring a conference entitled, “Shaping State and Local Tax Reform in Connecticut.” The conference will be held at Central from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. .
• The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities will host the CCM Convention and Exposition on October 14, 2004 from 8 AM to 5 PM at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell.
• The tentative date for the annual Chamber/EDIC sponsored Salute to Business is December 8th. The date has been changed for thie event since your last Management Report. More details will be forthcoming.
3. Council Committee Dates:
• Pension Committee – Monday, September 13, 2004, 5:00 pm, Town Manager’s Office
• Board of Education Meeting (Lights to be discussed)
• The Insurance Committee meets on Thursday, September 16.
• The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee meets on Thursday, September 16.
4. Department/Division News:
• Library – See the attached article from the library hotline regarding the “Boomers” impact on library services.
• Police – Attached is a press release from the Police Chief regarding unleashed dogs.
• Building Inspection Division – See attached monthly report from the Chief Building Official for the month of August. $26,872 in permit fees was collected.
• Planning and Economic Development – Ms. Janice McCarthy will be joining our staff as a part time secretary. We look forward to having her on board.
5. Board/Commission News:
• Strategic Planning Committee Meeting – September 14, 2004 – 7:00 PM. Silas Deane Middle School – Room 114. A Public Hearing will be held on October 13, 2004 at 7 pm in Council Chambers to receive input as to our long range goals. I have also attached a press release concerning ways the public can give input into their planning.
• Board of Education meets on Tuesday, September 14. The lights will be discussed at this meeting.
• The Historic District Commission meets on Tuesday, September 14.
• The Moeller Home Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, September 15 at 1:30 pm in the Community Center.
• The Inlands Wetland Commission meets on Wednesday, September 15.
• The Board of Assessment Appeals will be held on September 9, 11, 22 and 24.
• Attached is a notice of action by Zoning Board of Appeals at their August 23, 2004 meeting.
6. Council Questions/Answers:
• See the attached email message from David Whall regarding the impact that installing sidewalks would have on the cost of bus services for the school system.
• Attached is information regarding NESC standards and National Electrical Code for the height of utility poles and wires.
7. CRCOG: Nothing this week.
8. COST: I have been appointed to the Board of Directors for this organization.
9. ICMA: Nothing this week.
10. Miscellaneous:
• Attached is a thank you letter from the Executive Director of Inter-Community Mental Health Group for the $5000.00 contribution from the Town.
• Emergency Management – thingy Fippinger reports that the first major step was taken to involve members of the Wethersfield religious community in the emergency management process. The goal is to increase awareness of the process and to cultivate volunteers’ from the different church groups to assist if a disaster strikes. On November 18th a second, more intensive meeting will be held to increase volunteer involvement.
B. PROJECT UPDATES:
• Town Hall/Library – Attached is a letter from me to the President of the Friends of the Wethersfield Library regarding book donations during renovations. Their concerns are noted in a correspondence from the Friends to the Library Board of Directors, also attached.
• I will hold a meeting with the Nott Street Construction Project residents on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. The Director of Public Works and representatives from the State DOT and General Paving will also attend. A copy of the flyer that was mailed to residents is attached.
• The updated financial report for the Silas Deane Middle School Renovation project is attached.
• I have attached a copy of correspondence from resident Catherine Boyes regarding questions she had about the bond issue referendums and a copy of my response to her.
• Attached is a copy of the letter we will be sending to residents affected by the bond proposal to install new sidewalks at various locations.
