Remember the photojournalist Ken Krayeske who was illegally arrested and detained by the Hartford cops for taking a picture of Gov. Rell during a public parade last year? (He is in the processing suing multiple people and police organizations for that infringement of his First Amendment and other USA citizen rights.)
Well, Krayeske interviewed long-time Wethersfield resident and well-know local attorney Barbara Ruhe, who is running for State Senator (1st District) - a seat now occupied by Hartford resident John Fonfara.
To read his article, visit his website, the40yearplan.com.Also, I understand that Ruhe has written and spoken personally to Fonfara in order to set up public, face-to-face debates, but he has repeated dodged her with vague comments that he would think about it. Disclaimer: State Senate Candidate Ruhe is my wife. This message has not been initiated or approved by her or her campaign organization, Ruhe For Change, at RuheForChange.com.

The WBCA (Wethersfield Business and Civic Association) will be sponsoring a group of debates between challenger and incumbent for the 28th Assembly District, the 9th Senate District and the 1st Senate District on the Monday the 13th, and Tuesday the 14th, this month, October, 2008, at the Pitkin Community Center.
Though not all of the details have been worked out, this much is probably accurate:
Monday, October 13, at 6:00 PM, Ralph Capenera (R) will debate Paul Doyle (D) for Doyle's 9th Senate District position.
Tuesday, October 14, at 6:00 PM, John Cusano (R) will debate Russ Morin (D) for Morin's 28th Assembly District position.
That same evening, the 14th at 7:15 PM, Barbara J. Ruhe (R) will debate John Fonfara (D) for Fonfara's 1st Senate District position.
So, as good citizens of Wethersfield, Connecticut and the U.S. of A., it behooves you to attend each of the debates for those districts in which you live and for your general edification.

Through the Office of the Secretary of State, and funded with taxpayers' money, the following videos are made available to the public on how to use an optical scanner in order to vote on Nov. 4th:
You will need to close each window created by a link after viewing it.

Hey, TV - man, what is it now?- Footman, Dr. Ken, says (10/1) the WBCA has the Morin - Cussano debate at 6:00 and the Fontfara - Ruhe debate at 7:15 on Tuesday and YOU say (10/9) that it is almost the exact opposite!
- So, which is it?
- I think you need to call the WBCA A.S.A.P. and straighten this out.
- If you don't, you may lose happy viewers and gain unhappy ones....

WBCA's Matt Cholewa informed the candidate debating: Candidates, Attached is the press release for the debates on 10/13 [TONIGHT!]and 10/14 [TUESDAY/tomorrow] sponsored by the Wethersfield Business & Civic Association. The format will be as follows: Each candidate has a 2 minute opening statement and a 2 minute closing statement. There will be a coin flip for who goes first. Whoever goes first with opening goes last with closing.
-
Questions are asked by the moderator and will alternate among the candidates. 1.5 minutes for an answer, 1 minute rebuttal and 30 second surrebuttal. For the 1st Senate District it will be 1.5 minute answer, 1 minute rebuttal for the other two candidates, and 30 seconds surrebuttal.[Matt is a lawyer! Surrebuttal is a real word; look it up! kes]
-
The plan is to have podiums [lecterns?] for the candidates. I’ve been promised that there are two for us to use. For the 1st District Senate debate, with three candidates, we may need to go with you seated in chairs or at a table (if we don’t find a third podium).
-
Each debate will be about one hour (a few minutes longer for the 1st District).
-
I ask that each of you [candidates to] submit, as soon as possible, suggested questions/topics. We have our own ideas of course, but you know better than anyone what the issues are. Please email your ideas to me at mcholewa@snet.net... [This applies to the public as well, I have got to believe; hence I left his email address. kes]

A note to Matthew Cholewa, Debate Coordinator, WBCA, iterated here, on-line, following the Capenera / Doyle "Debate" last night, 10/13:
Monday, 10/13/2008; 11:00 PM
Matt,
Having viewed more than a few debates this political season, I must tell you that I was very disappointed by the conduct of the "audience" during the "debates" [Monday, 10/13]. The deportment of the audience - in the absence of firm instructions from the WBCA was predictable, Wethersfield being Wethersfield. The debate was marred by the unrestrained, visceral outbursts wholly uncalled for in a "debate." I left the room of the debate (F3 in the South wing of the Community Center) about 35 minutes into the the debate, disgusted.
The WBCA debate had more the air of the Roman Colosseum than a debate.
I do not look forward to the next two debates ... [today, 10/14], and I suspect that more civil members of the audience might agree.
Such debates as these ... are not really intended for the live audiences anyway. Why should the "crowd" be any more civil tomorrow when you did/could not anticipate such behavior tonight?
I suggest that you seriously consider conducting the next two debates in the closed studio of WCVT-14 (i.e. with no live audience present).
The WCTV-14 could run a cable from the studio to a TV monitor or two in room F3...for the political public to view. Questions from the public in attendance could still be sought and secured from those in that room and passed on to the moderator in the studio. The volume...on those monitors in F3 could be really cranked up nice and high for all of the visitors to easily hear. This would be no different than having the invisible home viewer telephone in his/her question(s) to an assistant to the moderator, the former transcribing the question and just passing it on for the moderator's consideration.
The debate should be about the candidates - NOT the audience!
I hope you correct the problems which occurred this evening and consider my solution to it.
I am copying this email to Rick Garrey and others. I hope that the officers of the WBCA huddle early tomorrow and work to mitigate the unruly mess which we experienced tonight. I hope that the remaining 5 debate participants will be offered a more debate-friendly environment!
Sincerely,
Dr.Ken

Matt Cholewa, Debate Coordinator, WBCA, responded to my email. Most of that email is produced below:
Ken,
...Rick Garrey will instruct the audience before both debates tonight that the audience is to be seen and not heard. No applause, boos, groans and grunts. I will also ask the candidates to police their own people ahead of time. I am also hopeful that the two races tonight do not have the same rancor among the candidates as last night’s did, which should also alleviate any problems.
Matt
[The underscoring above is mine; kes]

Full, on-line articleCourant.com: October 19, 2008 Editorial reporter Carolyn Lumsden
Why We Endorse CandidatesEvery fall, editorial writers at The Courant interview dozens of candidates for public office and decide which we think are most qualified. Our recommendations for the Nov. 4 elections will begin Thursday with our picks for Congress and will peak next Sunday with our presidential endorsement..... ..... Finally, we don't expect readers to agree with our recommendations. Nor do we want readers to rely only on our endorsements in evaluating candidates. We hope our recommendations are part of a broad range of information that citizens use in reaching their own decisions and voting on Nov. 4. Copyright © 2008, The Hartford CourantFor whatever the foregoing is worth, the Courant chose not to endorse the best candidate for the 1st Senate District, Barbara Ruhe. Voters of the 1st Senate District can rectify that on Nov. 4. kes
