Who knows the full story behind the fire chief's misuse of town funds? Harford Courant story today describes what he did. Who has some background on whether this was an innocent mistake or something else? I'm thinking I remember he was involved in some town car problems, but I'm not sure. Do the posters think we have a bad guy?

I don't know the "full story" but enough of it to be concerned. For starters, it's really lousy PR for someone in the public sector to refer to "slush funds". Next, most of the guys found out about this when they read it in the paper - not from notices that were supposedly posted at the stations. There is a serious lack of confidence and support from the rank and file at this point.

Perhaps a poor choice of words using 'slush fund", but this has been going on for years in the Fire Dept. Each company gets a budget, including the staff.
From those budgets, they spend it how they choose, whether on cleaning supplies, pizza after a fire or drill or other stuff not in the operating budget of the FD.
The staff would use it for conventions, training and other things not in the operating budget.
I don't recall a car problem with Chief Clark, but a few elections ago, he put a candidate for council sign on his lawn and then Town Mgr. Eardman ordered it down.

I happened to catch Peruta's latest TV program on Saturday. He recommends that Clark be arrested for stealing funds. That's sort of an extreme reaction but perhaps he knows something that the rest of us don't know. Peruta used to be very partisan about the Fire Dept, and he used to attack then Chief Watson on a regular basis. He may be just shhooting off his mouth.
