If you are discussing this current school year and the cuts that have been made maybe I can explain what is happening. Due to a major error in the budget )prior to dr proctors arrival) we have been in the red on this budget for most of the school year.
To make it short they are VERY close to closing the gap on that. The TC gave the board 98k to narrow it a while back. They had I believe 30,000 ish left to go. Not having the students for the already 1/2 day of school on the 21st is saving about 9k. The heat in the pool more money and yes the last few weeks of reading tutors even more money.
So why is this important. well if we can't close out the year on june 30th in the clear it is not as simple as the town giving the money to the board. Since they have already given the 98k they can only give two thousand more before it has to, by charter, go to referendum. Well you all know that that will cost the town around 15thousand just to do that. So wisely I think Dr. Proctor is making the tuff Fiscal decisions he needs to do this. By the way he has been working on this problem you are mostly noticing now almost since his arrival. To be so close to closing out this nightmare in the black is nothing short of amazing.
SO yes he gave the kids 1/2 day off (not teachers its already in the contract they will be at work) the savings is in the transportation and some non union suport staff.
Are you really that upset about it I mean come on, its a day of parties and turning your text books in. Did you think they were going to learn something on the last day of school?? Aside from that its a monday. Its silly to bring them all back for nothing.

As a parent that sees the impact of Dr. Proctor's decisions, I stand fully behind his direction and effort.
I have had only a cursory conversation with Dr. Proctor and look forward to speaking with him in a more indepth fashion.
Hopefully, he sees the big picture and will be able to make tough decisions based on solid facts and efforts.

maybe they should consider cutting the Asst Town Attorney raise of 80% that was given to a buddy of the mayor & deputy mayor for no reason. A few people have brought this up, but no one besides them seems to be concerned. I am now joining them, when you have to cut reading tutors and other programs, political patronage has to stop. Come on folks, where is the outrage about this, I wish that I had known about this last year when this happened. And then last night it was mentioned that the legal fees for the town had no funding and $$$ had to be transferred from other funds:o

Yes that is something I think was mentioned here by myself and others. However please keep in mind that the Board of education budget is a separate matter. Don't confuse the Board and what they need and have had approved with what the town decides to do. Also keep in mind that this budget was put into effect this time last year. Again, I will tell you that Dr. Proctor says there will be no more years where there are these huge mistakes. This last budget was not on his (dr. P's) watch nor was it on the current mayors watch. So Lets see how they do next year with this budget before we all play the blame game.
