You know what I find disturbing? With all the problems we are having in this town that are neglected because of budget constraints I find appalling. We need to fix the schools first and foremost. How do we let our kids go to schools with leaking roofs……….. This is what’s disturbing to me; through the tough economic times for the past 3-4 years I’ve taken a 22% pay cut and no raises. I’m sure I’m not alone and many of you have your own stories to tell but what gets me aggravated is that the TEACHERS are not will to give back at all. They continue to get their raises when the rest of us are sucking wind. This is a give and take society, I’m giving and the teachers are taking. They have to stop this mandatory escalation in raise and give some back so we can make improvements to our schools. I heard that 85% of the school budget is for teachers salaries. If they could cut that back to 80% we would get a lot more for the children of this town.

The legislators said that binding arbitration is not even on the radar screen for this year. Probably don't want to piss off the unions during an election year.

Well here are my two cents.
As anywhere, there are teachers that have a great impact on our children (we'll talk positive here) and those that just put in their time.
I agree that something must be done to cull out the second ones. However, I do not feel that they are overpaid, but I do feel that they are underworked.
Why? In many private schools the teachers are mandated to take part in extracurricular (or extended curricular for those that are moving in that semantical direction) activities.
There may or may not be added compensation, but it would be at the rate of any coach, which is pennies per hour of involvement.
This would actually help the teachers and students in developing extended relationships outside the classroom, as the time involvement for an activity make class room and family time pale in comparison. The carry over would be, at the minimum, better class behavior, more respect, more control, and do we suggest more learning and less obedience control-detention and suspension.
The problem...the unions would fight this tooth and nail.
This needs to be rectified.
