I agree with the fact that there are many areas of our town that could use improvement, but Cottone Field is one of those areas. You state that you dont see anything getting better, but then you point out two things that you like. What I dont understand about the anti light faction is, why so opposed? Unless you feel that this project is going to upset your personal lifestyle, what is it about improving the conditions of our fields that is wrong? I dont think the lights are going to be aimed into your bedroom.

Lights out, you offer, at times, valid talking points. But the exaggerations that go along with your last posting are indicative of that side of the ledger (midnight practice).
Exaggerations tend to help your cause as it motivates those that are on-the-fence and may not have all the facts. As this progresses and you have time to visit other communities that currently have lights and those that are in the process of acquiring lights, you may tend to see that there are a wide variety of applications, all of which are not depreciating the surrounding neighborhoods.
As I posted on another topic, we acknowledge the many shortfalls within Wethersfield and this is a starting point for us.

I happened to be driving through Newington today and I went for a spin by their High School football field. They have lights and there are houses in the area - they also have lights on a soccer field in front of the old VA Hospital which has no residences nearby - I would like to know the definition of "densely populated". From what I can see there are no more homes within the range of the football field in Wethersfield than there are in Newington. I also cant understand all of the comments that I am seeing regarding "midnight soccer games" and "10:00 practices". I mean come on, does anyone think that practice will begin at 10:00?Wethersfield has noise ordinances which will prohibit any event without a special permit to go beyond 10:00. I just dont understand what it is about improving the field that anyone could be opposed to.

It shows an overall downward spiral. Oldetowne that was a very good post from 4-6. LouS has some good points, we need to move forward and break the 1970 barrier.

I am responding to a posting on the forum in an different area. Part of the posting was: "The WTXA, a local taxpayer, watchdog group presided over by Rocco Orsini".
Can anyone enumerate on the population that is part of this group? I am not being sarcastic here, but would truly like to know if my dad and mom and mother-in-law (and many of their peers), all living and paying taxes in town and all over 75, who say they are backing my causes, are actuallyl part of the WTXA?

I took Lou's comment to mean that his relatives were not members or supporters of the WTXA even though they fit the purported demographic of those who are its most steadfast allies.
Your response does, however, make one wonder why the field and light supporters are so consistently and vehemently opposed to having a referendum (Dan O's statement last week in the Courant that the 11/2003 election, despite the lowest turnout in over 40 years, being the most recent pronouncement that there is a "mandate" for the project) if the WTXA is merely a dozen cranky old men. Maybe they are afraid to find out otherwise.

Syzygy, when you fall you fall big. Look up facetious, and then suplant for sarcastic...typically, when someone writes items there may be additional meanings to such renderings (tongue-in-cheek?).
And the answer is I do know where most residents and taxpayers stand...that is why those that were elected to the BOE and Council got there, thank you very much.
My email is xxxxxxxxxx anytime you would like to have a frank discussion, but that would mean that you would have to unveil yourself.
[glow=red,3,300]SYSOPS: I covered your email address because you don't want it public out here. If they want to contact you, all they have to do his click on your name and they could send you a message. [/glow]

I'd like to respond to a comment re: The Light Supporters being afraid of a referendum. The light supporters are NOT afraid of a referendum. In fact we all know it will pass the way we want it too! Our concern is the delay a referendum will cause in fixing the field. All a referendum will do is ensure our kids play one more season on that awful field.

Have you heard how the WTXA is going about their petition to force a referendum?
First they developed a flier with innacurate data (i.e. field will cost $2.4 million when in fact the bids came in at $600,000 plus). Then they began circulating it throughout the community. However rather than spread it to all of Wethersfield, they chose instead to target just our seniors. They even went to AARP meetings and scared our seniors into thinking this was a multi-million dollar project and that their taxes were going to go up 1000’s of dollars if they didn’t sign this petition. Then they took these fliers filled with lies and headed to the local grocery stores where they perpetuated the lie. Thinking that would be enough you would figure they would stop there, but they didn’t. They then took their case to Mediplex where many of our seniors are living their last days or are recuperating from a painful surgery.
I ask you, do any of you real think the residents of Mediplex are concerned about Cottone Field? I would think that they have other issues far more important to them. How would you feel if your Mom had some idiot pushing a clipboard under her nose while she is recuperating from a major surgery?
Oh an let's not forget the petititon itself. Ever wonder why the questions on it forces you to vote Yes I don’t want lights and Yes I don’t want turf. Wouldn’t it be easier to understand No for NO lights and No for NO Turf. But then again I guess if my goal were to confuse and manipulate I would have worded it that way too.
I find it disgraceful that an organization that touts itself under the name of our town would resort to this! The Wethersfield Tax Payer Association does not speak foir me and if I had the power, I would strip the name Wethersfield from their organizations name. They do not represent the Wethersfield I live in. And what they are doing is a disgrace to our towns name.
