A neighbor told me that Ocean State Job Lots bought the Stop & Shop at Wells Road and Silas Deane, along with Amici's and the bank. I guess we can look on the bright side - it's not another gas station and convenience store or Chinese restaurant... yet.

Yes, thats what we need on the Silas Deane. Some railroad salvage type junk store. Way to go Wethersfield!

I agree that it is not exactly what we want, BUT do we need another empty store?? I'd rather have a store there than no store, see the lot at the old fun zone and tell me if that is better.
However I have not heard this news yet...are you sure?? I have been away on vacation you may be right!

MRS B,
I guess if junk stores are the best that we as a town can attract than the old saying may apply, beggars can't be choosers. At one time, we were a much better community than that.

I guess we are supposed to lower our standards and take whatever comes our way.

Your right we are a better community than that, but unfortunatly there hasn't been a lot of high end retailers knocking at our door. We have a lot of blight. it doesn;t look good. I am hoping that with bed bath and beyond success it will attract others. Hopefully they can be successful. in the past the low end retailers were allowed to come. like Dots, and pay half ect...that looks bad. Not only that it makes the town look poor, like that is the base we shop from. Look at starbucks, they put a stor ein evry towm surrounding us before they put one here. Wht is that? We certinatly drink coffee. we support three dunkin donuts. If you are a retailer and you can put one store in a 15 mile circle, you will pick the place that makes your store look the best. The silas deane is not the best. YET, I feel that it is working hard on getting better. But the first place to start is keeping blight and empty stores out. The seccond step is that we residenst need to support these establishments as much as we can. Want examples of places that aremaking the silas deane nice again, Sunys, the flower box, the bunker (although I dislike that new sign) max bibos, the new CVS and SBUX, The new banks, the SDMS did a great job with the landscaping out front, Carnival looks ten times better now. there is more and more.
Look up, its getting better!!

Mrs B is correct. Empty/blighted buildings are not very attractive and act as a deterence to prospective businesses looking to establish footings locally.
I guess (and this is off the wall but only based on the fact that my wife and daughters like to travel to Clinton, NY and MA to the outlets) I wonder why the upscale stores found in Clinton, etc., couldn't be approached to come to Weth. Off Elm, in the Meadows, a great area for an attraction such as this, adjacent to SD and Old Weth. and 3 major highways. How about a multiplex theatre there as well?
If I had money or knew a developer I would run with this.

Great idea Lou. You'd run into the same rocket scientists who voted down the interchange zone and have a stroke every time anyone talks about Putnam Park 2 or a boat launch under the bridge. Wonder how many of them are the same people who have been whining for years about no growth in the grand list. I agree that the stores on SDH will take a while to turn around, especially with the "MetroPatterns" that seem to be affecting our retail demographics, but switching a $1 store for a $2 store isn't going to make a dent in anyone's property tax bill.

I believe that I heard this week that there are a bunch of new stores coming to town... In Goff Brook (THANK GOD) is an Office Max (or Depot), in the shopping center is a UPS store & with Starbucks/CVS will be a new nationwide sub chain & Blockbuster video. I think there's more but we definately moving in the right direction!

Ponder this: The group which owned the northeast corner of Wells and Silas Deane recently sold it. That corner includes the current BankNorth, Amici's and tadah! Stop & Shop there. Guess who purchased it. You guessed it: OSJ Inc. AKA the "Ocean State Job Lots" people.

One man's junk is another man's treasure.
Maybe Ruby Vine will come to town.
