I haven't heard or seen any feedback of the charter changes.
Rocky Hill uses the Mayor on top of the ticket and it seems to work for them. I think it could work for our town also.

Russ Morin's days as Mayor would be over if he ever had to compete head to head with another candidate. He has a difficult time transferring his thoughts to words and would look awful in a town debate

He may be inarticulate, but his PR machine is working overtime. Between the Courant and Weth. Life he wouldn't need to buy campaign ads.

First, I believe that Rocky Hill's system would cause more harm than good, as has been stated in presentations.
Although this is an aside, I am just responding to the afformentioned item within the thread topic.
For all those that cast stones, public speaking can be an extraordinary effort for some. I hope that the majority of voters would be less likely to vote for an Ivy League orator that uses language over the top of most individuals...especially when the dialogue doesn't say anything vs what you are saying our current mayor is and does/doesn't have. I would hope the person's credibility and sincerety would override what the current "perception" might be. He communicates to all levels and there can be no doubt about what he says. Inarticulate is a strong word to use, but I am sure that all of us that are writing in these threads have measured success of high SAT scores, laude awards and IQ's of 150...

LouS wrote "but I am sure that all of us that are writing in these threads have measured success of high SAT scores, laude awards and IQ's of 150..." Well, maybe some people here actually do. I will apologize for saying he's "inarticulate" if you think that is too strong. The different styles of the past few mayors - Russ, Kitch, Wayne, Danny C. - show that there is room for every kind of speaker.

Oldetowne,
Yes, there is a bell curve affect. The assumption would be that there are all types of people responding and yes as well, all types of management styles.

I agree that public speaking is not easy. That is why I know enough not to get behind a microphone. The Mayor should appropriately be able to articulate himself with some degree of professionalism. The current Mayor has a difficult time putting together 3 words with out saying ah, dah, ah. Now I'm not saying he's not intelligent but he sure is not the best spokesperson for our town.

Our president can't string a sentence with out uhhhh either?
Our Mayor is a regular guy not a professional politician. Have any of you whiners gone to his office hours and talked to him personally??? He’s a great guy and you can tell he is not BS ing you. He cares about this town and is working hard to make it better.
Shame on you for imposing your snotty standards on a man working as hard as he is, he has a FT job, and a family, and he sits and takes it from everyone at the tc meetings as well as all of his other mayoral duties. Yes he signed up for it but lets give the guy some credit…the whole point of public service is that the PUBLIC can serve, not just the upper crust of the land.
You are all so demanding this is public service at the town level!! Does he lie, does he cheat, and does he drink while at work?? Is he pilfering money to add onto his home? Does he wine and dine on the town dime? Does he not return his videos??? This is stuff you can nail him on, saying uh a few too many times is not an offence I am worried about.

I didn't say the Mayor wasn't a nice guy. I didn't accuse him of any unethical behavior and I'm sure he does return his videotapes. My only comment was as the town’s spokesperson he is an embarrassment. Communicating effectively is a necessary skill in being Mayor. When Wayne Sassano was Mayor you could be proud when people heard him speak. Even Kitch did a reasonably good job communicating.
I do agree with you on Bush. It's time he leaves too!

Sorry. I didn't mean to offend anyone. If the standards are that he doesn't drink at work or rip us off, then I vote for Russ for Mayor for Life.

An embarrassment? I guess it all depends on your perspective. I know many people that think they are the gift of gab and would most certainly side with mocmoc. However, these same people have personalities that do not let them relate to their co-workers or underlings very well. (live in a glass house?)
Russ would definitely win a head-to-head hands down and most certainly, I do not feel that he is an embarrassment and I am sure there is a vast majority that feels the same way.

Again for clarification purposes, I don't think Russ is a bad person. I actually think he is a likable guy and I voted for him. I just don't think he has the communication skills to be Mayor. Some apprently think you don't need those skills to be Mayor. That's where we have an honest difference of opinion.
At least I'm not some sycophant who feels the need to cast roses at the feet of every person who is in political power. nuff said. ;D

Without trying to sound like a "sycophant" (Wow- you look that one up in the dictionary!), I also agree that Russ does well as our mayor. He just raised like $5,000 for our kids and when he speaks to people one-on-one he's really quite articulate. As to the topic, I haven't heard much on this thread about anything other than the direct election of mayor...What about the budget referendum idea being pushed by our dear friends at the WTXA???

A budget referendum is a bad idea for this town. I have lived in places that had them and it can work if there is sufficient information and participation. That being said, annual 10-20% tax increases are also a bad idea for the town and will absolutely help the WTXA to get more support for its agenda.

Good post.
Can you believe that this is still something that is desired after the West Hartford mess? It appears that there is a control issue by a small group.
As I think about that statement, I think it is more about controlling the process. Based on this, The budget that was selected this year would have gone to referendum, most assurredly passed, if those that spoke at the meeting reflected even a small ratio of the general voting population. But the length of this would have added unneeded time to the process...but that seems to be the way that that group likes to proceed.
Someone had posted earlier that the voters have the ability to impose their views by electing the candidates that support their position. Any budget referendum would be overkill. Just as having an extra 5 minutes at the end of the council meeting to hear yourself repeat the same message stated earlier is overkill.
