Everyone individual who owns a home or a business in Wethersfield, in Connecticut, in the USA, should be REALLY concerned about the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Kelo -v- New London (CT).
In the Hartford Courant today, 6/30/2005, appeared a half-page advertisement which called to every US citizen, especially those here in CT to attend a rally in New London, on this coming Tuesday, 7/5/2005.
If you think that you can ignore this issue, you cannot. If you think you will be immune from the effects of this court interpretation of our US Constitution, you are dead wrong, if you own private property, no matter how large or small.
If you think that the current Town Council and those which follow it will not take advantage of the license afforded by this Court's 5/4 split decision, to take your property and make it available to someone with a better tax-producing plan, then you have you had better think long and hard about this right now and get involved before it is too late.
If you substitute the name of YOUR street address for that of "Fort Trumbull" and substitute WETHERSFIELD for "City of New London" in the following paraphrase of that advo, you might get a better feeling of what is involved. Live in a "rich" neighborhood with no blight? It doesn't matter; you are not safe. Got a decent business in a decent neighborhood? It doesn't matter either; you are not safe either....not with the ramifications of this Court's decision.

Rally to Save the Fort Trumbull Homeowners !
Rally to Stop the City of New London from Throwing Fort Trumbull Residents Out of their Homes.
Rally on Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at 6:00 PM at the New London City Hall, 181 State Street, New London
The Supreme Court's decision in the Kelo case allows the use of eminent domain for the taking of private property from a citizen for private business development. The Government (Federal, State, Local) can now TAKE YOUR home or small business for an office park or a big box store, or anything else which MIGHT generate more taxes for the government to spend. The residents of Fort Trumbull stand to lose their homes to PRIVATE developers - not just the Government for "public use." Now is the time to stop eminent domain ABUSE (such as this) in New London (and later in Wethersfield)! On July 5, when the city council meets for the first time after the decision, we MUST send them a clear message: LET THESE PEOPLE STAY IN THEIR HOMES! THE CITY DOES NOT NEED THEIR PROPERTIES FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS! The Fort Trumbull homeowners (and those in Wethersfield supporting them) are American heroes who should be honored and NOT evicted.
