I see this as a non-political, non-sports thread intended for students, parents and those working with them to post notices about activities of and opportunities for high school students.
I lead off with the following notice about a supportive activity by the Wethersfield Youth Advisory Board, a subcommittee of Wethersfield Social and Youth Services.
Going to the Junior or Senior Prom can be an expensive proposition - unless you have a Fairy Godmother or a clan of elves.
The Wethersfield Youth Advisory Board (WYAB) is sponsoring the "Glass Slipper Project" to provide formal wear for High School Junior and Senior girls who are residents of Wethersfield, who might not be able to afford an expensive prom dress.
Among the elfs in this project are parents, former juniors and seniors, and other ladies of the community who are willing to donate new or previously-loved, quality gowns which they no longer need. There may also be mothers, grandmothers, volunteers and more in the community who may be able to provide the fitting and tailoring of the gowns. Other Wethersfield businesses may be joining in with additional services too.
This project allows high school girls to select from the items donated for the formal events in the spring, a Junior Prom in May and a Senior Prom in June, for example. The idea is to keep the cost of attending events to a minimum while sharing items that may be taking up closet space.
Donations of clean, new or gently used gowns (e.g., prom, bridesmaid, etc.), shoes and accessories will be accepted at the Town Hall, Department of Social and Youth Services offices (down stairs!) from April 3rd - 6th from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Selecting gowns and accessories will take place on the afternoons of April 25th to 27th at the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield St. from 2:30 to 4:30 PM.
A donation of $20 to the Youth Advisory Board by or for each "shopper" is suggested to help the WYAB with its programs. This program is limited to Wethersfield residents only. For questions, please contact Social and Youth Services at 721-2977.
