UNICO -&- KEANE FOUNDATION AGAIN HOST GOLF TOURNAMENT Monday, June 5, 2006 at Gillette Ridge
Golfers Don't Delay Sign up ASAP!
Wethersfield Unico and the Keane Foundation have announced plans to host their fourth annual Golf Tournament on June 5th at the Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield.
This will be the first time that the event will be held at Gillette Ridge, a challenging new Arnold Palmer-designed course which is part of CIGNA’s 600 acre Bloomfield redevelopment project.
The entry fee will be only $150 per person. This will include an 18-hole round of golf with cart, complete access to the practice facility, locker rooms, a cookout style lunch including sausage and peppers, hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments which will be provided prior to the start of play. Dinner prepared by the Club will be served at the conclusion of play in the evening.
The shotgun start will begin at 1:00PM. Refreshments will be served during play. Prizes will be presented after dinner to winners of the various contests. This will be followed by a raffle as well as an auction.
The Wethersfield Chapter of Unico National was formed in 1977 and it has conducted a golf tournament every year since. This will be its 30th tournament. In 2003 Unico joined forces with the Richard Keane Foundation and, together, they hosted their first joint tournament. This successful venture proved to be a perfect match of two very capable fundraising groups and its success has spawned an ongoing relationship.
Over the past 29 years Wethersfield Unico has contributed close to $600,000 to local and national charities. A major portion of the money has gone toward scholarships for local high school graduates who are going on to college. Support has also gone to local youth activities, needs of the elderly, health appeals (mental health, cancer research, visiting nurses, etc,) high school graduation night, cultural activities, and special donations to Wethersfield and Rocky Hill.
The Keane Foundation was established to honor the memory of Wethersfield resident Richard M. Keane who lost his life during the attack against our country at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. The goal of the Foundation is to create a family sports center in Wethersfield to be enjoyed by families in the community. The Keane Foundation also sponsors many events throughout the year that not only raise money for the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center but also to bring families together for hours of enjoyment. In its short existence, through much hard work, the Keane Foundation has become a well-respected organization in the region and there is no doubt that its very ambitious goal of providing a Sports Center will soon be realized.

On Sunday, October 22, at 1:oo PM, at 154 Prospect Street, the Wethersfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Wethersfield Chapter of UNICO National invite you to its Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to mark the opening of the (2) two bocce courts completed at Millwoods Park.
The Bocce Courts are straight back, beyond the Skate Park, near the playground equipment, deep in Mill Woods Park, in a shaded grove.
Food and music will be provided to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and town staff who have worked unselfishly over the last year to make the courts a reality. Informal games of bocce will take place throughout the day, following the ceremonial tossing of the first pallino (which is the small ball that serves as the target for the remaining balls.)
Mike Fortunato, Past President of the Wethersfield chapter of Unico National, stated “Fundraising began exactly one year ago at a wine tasting event, and overwhelming support from our community allowed us to complete the project within a year."
Each court measures 72’ x 12’ and has a stonedust surface, popular on the east coast. The bocce courts were built to encourage all people, both young and old, to play as well as to promote Italian heritage appreciation.
"This project is a continuation of UNICO’s long standing commitment to give back to the community," continued Mr. Fortunato.
Over the past 25 years, the Wethersfield chapter of Unico has donated over $500,000 toward student scholarships, youth organizations, and to those in need in Wethersfield and the surrounding communities.
For more information about this event and about UNICO, call Mr. Fortunato at (860) 529-3828 or email him at Fortunatom@aol.com.
