New Britain, CT --–
Online and mail in registrations are now being accepted for the 2005 CT RACE IN THE PARK being held Saturday, May 7 at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain. The Mother’s Day weekend tradition is a statewide effort to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research, treatment, education and support groups.
“We are very excited to build upon the support we received last year,” says Melissa Hart Town Ambassador for Wethersfield. “The walk is very personal for me. I lost my mother to breast cancer just before Christmas 2003. She was only 56 years old. I also have a very close friend battling the disease right now. Any contribution is helpful. We have the chance to save a lot of lives. I will be participating in the walk with several family members, including my three young children who truly miss their grandmother.”
The day will begin by honoring breast cancer survivors with a special Survivor’s Breakfast with Honorary Survivor Chair, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell, who was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year. Other events that day will include a Kids’ Challenge and Fun Run, a Male 5K, a Female 5K, a one-mile Fun Walk, and 4K Walk, music, refreshments, and merchandise.
The three chairs for the 2005 CT RACE IN THE PARK are longtime civic leaders Judy Greco and Claudia Helfgott, and also breast cancer survivor Carol Jordan. This year’s honorary chairs are Connecticut Congresswoman Nancy Johnson, State Comptroller Nancy Wyman, and Ruth Ann Lobo, a breast cancer survivor, teacher, and mother of former UConn basketball start Rebecca Lobo.
Pink silicone bracelets benefiting the 2005 CT RACE IN THE PARK are also being sold at the CT RACE office, 185 Main St., New Britain, CT. The bracelets cost $3 each or two for $5. The 2005 CT RACE IN THE PARK is administered by New Britain-based CT Breast Health Initiative,Inc. Money raised in 2004 allowed the organization to award $175,000 in grants to 17 breast cancer organizations around the state.
