Though originally associated with Christmas, luminaria have now been adopted by a broad spectrum of ethnic groups as a way of bringing light into the darkest part of our northern hemisphere. It is now seen as a symbol of hospitality and rememberance. The Richard M. Keane Foundation ( www.keanefoundation.org ) is again sponsoring a "light up your neighborhood" celebration this yuletide with the sale of luminaria. This will also serve as an important fundraiser for the Keane Foundation whose goal is to erect a new sports complex in Town for our student athletes. The KF luminaria are being sold at the Wethersfield Travel agency in the heart of Olde Wethesfield, at 219 Main, right next to the Main Street Creamery. Wethersfield Travel's hours are M-F: 9-6 and Sat: 10-1. If you plan to purchase 50 or more, please call in advance to place an order: (860) 646-2500Each kit is only $1.oo and contains a single bag, an 18-hour candle, & instructions, but no sand. You will need to get the sand for ballast to keep the luminaria upright (though kitty litter can do). Free sand is available at the town garage and perhaps at Mill Woods; unsalted would be better. So how about doing your part to make Wethersfield seem a little friendly and hospitable this season by buying a couple dozen luminaria kits from the Keane Foundation - all for a good cause!

I am tempted to mention lights on Cottone Field, but that wouldn't be in the spirit of the season.
