For those who are not card-carrying members of the NRA or just plain paranoid about being defenseless when unarmed, these turkey shoots do not result in the execution of any live Wethersfield turkeys (though I here there are a lot of them in town).
You shoot at a target with a shotgun. (The turkeys have been butchered and frozen prior to the event to be awarded to the best shot in each "round" of about 25 shooters. There is plenty of good basic grilled food and beverages for sale. A couple of contained fires are usually going to warm the ill-prepared and under-dressed. If the weather is bad one Sunday, there is always another.
To the curious and disarmed, you don't even need to own nor bring your own shotgun to the shoot. There are club guns (10, 12, 20, 410 - I believe) available for you to borrow. The helpful club members (Fish and Game Club) will even show you how to load, stand and shoot. All for only a dollar a shot, one shot per target. You can buy more than one shot for each round, unless the rules have been changed.
It's fun! So bring your kids and wives or significant others down to the meadow and take your best shot. (If shooting paper targets for turkeys is not your thing, there is always the more challenging "clay pigeons."
