Important events warrant their own thread, especially if they might generate questions, commentary or critique, above and beyond the usual: who, what, where, when, why, how and how much.
Non-controversial events just need a little space which would not necessarily their own, perhaps on a kiosk or bulletin board - for the public to peek at periodically as a heads up or just a simple reminder.
They could either be removed by their author (or administrator) once the event has passed - unless the public feels compelled to offer their feelings about its performance, outcome or significance.
In such a vein, I have started this thread, for events which just need a little highlighting without a lot of hype or hooplah, in whatever order you and I might think of them.

- Where is everyone?
- It is Friday morning and it's far too quiet here.
- What is everyone going to do this weekend
worth telling everyone else about?

ccthd.org/100804flucliniccancellation.htmCentral Connecticut Health District Date: October 8, 2004 Health District Cancels Flu Clinics "The Central Ct Health District has cancelled all influenza immunization clinics due to a shortage in vaccine. The District does not anticipate receiving any vaccine. Connecticut will likely receive only half of the amount of vaccine previously anticipated. Due to this significant shortage the Central CT Health District is urging residents and vaccinators to closely follow the CDC interim influenza vaccination recommendations. Only those individuals who fall into the following HIGH RISK categories should be vaccinated: - All children aged 6-23 months;
- Adults aged 65 and older;
- Persons aged 2-64 years old with underlying chronic medical conditions;
- All women who will be pregnant during the influenza season;
- Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities;
- Children aged 6 months-18 years on chronic aspirin therapy;
- Health-care workers involved in direct patient care; and
- Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children aged <6 months.
Healthy people between the ages of 2 and 64 years old should NOT get their annual flu shot this year.Information regarding available vaccination clinics may be obtained by contacting the CT Chapter of the American Lung Association hotline at (888) 668-6358 or their website at www.alact.org.

Good Post Doc, this is really too bad for the masses. I wonder if anything will be available later in the flu season. I guess a good question is; if you really need one where do you go?

Where to go to get a flu shot if you REALLY need one: - 1. Call your primary care physician (family doctor)
- 2. Call the CT/American Lung Assoc: 1-888 668-6358 - really!
To make sure that the people REALLY need the vaccine have a chance to get it, people who really don't really need it should not try to get it. (Of course all it will take is a few children dieing from the flu early in the season to create a stampede for it as happened last year). Who REALLY needs it (again): - All children aged 6-23 months;
- Adults aged 65 and older;
- Persons aged 2-64 years old with underlying chronic medical conditions;
- All women who will be pregnant during the influenza season;
- Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities;
- Children aged 6 months-18 years on chronic aspirin therapy;
- Health-care workers involved in direct patient care; and
- Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children aged <6 months.

WCTV-14 was unable to air "Wethersfield LIVE" last nite (Friday, 10/15 21:00 EDT). So, "What's up, Doc!" - my little corner of a half dozen or so bulletins and alerts for this week was not aired either. The text of my would-be presentation is posted here so that you might not miss some of these nuggets: - Today, Sat: 10/16:
What have you PERSONALLY done to support our troops overseas? Now is your chance to show your support our troops in Irag and other global hotspots. The Wethersfield Police Department (WPD) and the Woman's Club of Newington & Wethersfield are conducting a "Stuff the Cruiser" event tomorrow from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - outside the Supper Stop & Shop in the Jordan Lane Shopping Plaza.
They will be looking for YOUR contribution of a variety of articles of non-perishable foods, handy toiletries and hand-held games. These will be shipped as "care packages" to our troops. Not sure what to bring? Come anyway, talk to the volunteers personally, then go shopping for an item or two to donate!
- On Sun.10/17:
Our WPD continues its busy weekend of fundraising efforts at the Red Lobster Restaurant WITH a 2-1/2 hr PANCAKE BREAKFAST from 8 - 10:30am. WPD Officers & Explorers will be cooking for and serving you personally! Tickets for Adults (& kids 12 &up):$5. Senior citizens & Kids 4-11: $3. Kids <3:Free! For your Q:'s & ticket requests call Sgt. Crabtree: 721-27.25.{ WPD } If you don't have tickets by now, just show up - you may be lucky enough to join in the fun and food.
- Also on Sun.10/17:
Now that you have tanked up on all those carbohydrates, you need to burn them off. Head over to Standish Park in Old Wethersfield (near Hamner School) for the 6th Annual Mikey's Place - Charity 5K Walk and certified Running Race. Final registration is between 9:00 - 10:30am. The Race starts with a BANG at 11 SHARP!. Remember this is a dual fundraiser for both Mikey's Place and Weth Dollars for Scholars program.
- Then, on Mon. 10/18:
We have another, regular meeting of the Weth Town Council. If you attend (or follow all the play-by-play action on Cox Cable Channel 16) you will see one of the newer members of Town Hall, Ms. RaeAnn Palmer who - as "Assistant to the Town Manager" - will be taking the out-of-town Ms. Therrien's place at that meeting.
- Thurs. 10/21:
Parents, do you have any kids in school up to Grade 5? If you do, listen up! The Weth. BOE is holding another special meeting to garner your comments and questions about THEIR plans to possibly REDISTRICT some of your kids to different schools - STARTING IN SEPT., NEXT YEAR, 2005. The meeting is held in the WHS AUDITORIUM and starts at 7:30 PM. Each parent is limited to only 5 minutes of commentary. Remember, that's this Thursday, 7:30 pm at WHS.
- If you are looking for a flu shot, remember:
To be eligible for a flue shot you would have to be in one of the "at-risks categories" to qualify. Call the (CT chapter of the) American Lung Association at: (888) 668-6358 to find out if you do and where a flu-shot clinic may be. What do you think folks, should all of our flu vaccine have been manufactured in the USA or should half of it continue to be outsourced overseas?
- Next Fri. Oct 22:
You will again have a chance to tune in to WFSB-TV at 5:30 PM for Scott Haney’s Around CT vigniette about Wethersfield on Channel 3 at 5:30PM.
- Finally,
remember, today, Saturday, 10/16, will be the very last day for you to visit the Scarecrows Along Main Street - up close and personal, before they go online in cyberspace.
