To mark the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America, Governor M. Jodi Rell has proclaimed September 11, 2008, a Day of Remembrance in Connecticut.
The Governor asks that state residents observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. on Thursday, the time the first hijacked airliner crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City seven years ago. The Governor also directed that U.S. and State of Connecticut flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise through sundown on September 11.
For more information, please visit details. The Richard M. Keane Foundation will be celebrating the opening and dedication of the new "9/11 Memorial Sports Center", located at the Pitkin Community Center tomorrow. Details shall follow.

We have come such a long way since that tragic day of 9/11/01. The stunning new Sports Facility that will serve generations in the Wethersfield community, is a wonderful reminder that healing after disaster is possible.
Please join us at the Grand Opening on September 11, 2008 as we unveil all of the incredible details of Wethersfield’s newest Gymnasium, Fitness Center and Meeting Rooms. Technology is everywhere! Including the energy efficiency of new, distinctive, well insulated windows, upgraded plumbing, electricity, and ventilation systems; new TV’s, fitness and boxing equipment; and wireless computer systems to work on a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure.
All of these were made possible by the financial support of many….those who made contributions through United Way Campaigns, Memorial Donations in the name of a loved one, through Individual Donations, by seeking grant funding, and by supporting one of the many fundraisers that have been held over the past 7 year….every penny has been used to create the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center. Thank you all!
A very special Thanks to all of those who have volunteered to support the Keane Foundation, from those who serve on the Board of Directors, to those who have chaired events, sold tickets, counted money, prepared or cleaned up after events, made telephone calls, worked on our steel relics from the WTC, and so much more! Now it is your turn to be entertained and enjoy the fruits of you labors in the amazing new facility. I salute you all!
Gratefully,
Judy Keane

Wethersfield's Richard M. Keane Foundation announces the opening of the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center in the east wing of the Pitkin Community Center. All are invited to the grand opening and dedication of the facility, to be held September 11, 2008 on the Community Center grounds, 30 Greenfield Street.
There will be an open house from 1-6 p.m. and a formal dedication ceremony at 6:30 pm. In the event of rain, the dedication ceremony will be held inside the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center Gymnasium. This community event will feature tours of the facility, presentations and remarks by town leaders and special guests, a blessing of the facility and lighting of the WTC Monument.
The Keane Foundation has acquired 2 pieces of steel from the remains of the World Trade Center, which have now been incorporated into the design of the 9/11 Memorial Sports Center. One artifact is mounted on the wall of the gymnasium and another 18-foot piece is the focal point of the renovated entrance, a monument to all of those who died that day. The artifacts were introduced to the Wethersfield community during this year's Memorial Day parade. A "Flag of Honor" with the names of the almost 3,000 victims of the World Trade Center attacks also has been incorporated into the building design.
The event is expected to draw a large number of supporters. After 4 p.m., on site parking will be available only for officials and for the handicapped, and street parking will be limited. The Greenfield Pool parking lot will be available all day to visitors. At 4 p.m. parking and shuttles will be available at the former Northeast Utilities building at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and Wolcott Hill Road, and at Wethersfield High School, 411 Wolcott Hill Road. Free shuttles will run continuously to return visitors to the lots.
The Richard M. Keane Foundation was formed shortly after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, where Richard Keane and two other Wethersfield residents, David Winton and Jeffrey Bittner perished. The mission of the Keane Foundation is to provide a facility for the community that will offer sports, fitness, educational and recreational programs. The Keane Foundation has reached its goal with wide-spread private and public support, as well as the dedicated assistance of many in the community.
