3. Council and Board/Committee Dates:
· Tuesday, June 21 – Planning & Zoning Commission; Friends of the Nature Center
· Thursday, June 23 – Brainard Airport Noise Abatement Committee; Parks & Recreation Board
4. Department/Division News:
· Physical Services – The May tonnage report is attached. At the Free Throw Away Day last Saturday, the transfer station had 288 cars or about one car every 2 minutes. The revenue that would have been collected is approximately $7,200. I am waiting to hear on the cost/amount of tonnage brought to the landfill. The cost for a second 95 gallon barrel for the upcoming fiscal year is $60.00. There will be no pro-rating of barrels. For the current second barrel users, Paine’s will begin billing customers on July 1 for the 2005-06 fiscal year.
· Library - Between June 9 and June 16, children’s librarian Regina Aleksandravicius has visited every K-5 classroom in the Wethersfield Public Schools. Every year she goes into the schools to tell thousands of kids about the Library’s summer reading program. This year the theme is ‘The Quest for a Good Book-Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds’. Kids pursue their quest through six levels, achieving the status of jester, dragon, prince/princess, knight, wizard, and at the pinnacle of their quest, King/Queen. The children’s room is already a castle, signup for library cards is booming, and the kickoff for summer reading is an evening performance by Steve Roslonek of SteveSongs on June 23rd. Director Laurel Goodgion received the following note: "Compliments to all the folks in the Reference Dept. I am a computer beginner and the people at the desk have been so pleasant and helpful."
The Town Hall building façade drawings are on display on easels in the Library.
· Social and Youth Services – Attached is a Senior Client Satisfaction Survey which was returned at a very high volume. We appreciate all the positive work the staff does with our seniors. House Works – a day for volunteers to assist homeowners who need repairs and maintenance on their houses but cannot afford to hire professionals was held last Saturday, June 11th. Several volunteers who signed up were unable to attend, so this year, only one house was involved. This house received some new paint and the home owner was very pleased. Our thanks to Sipersteins who donated all the painting and cleaning supplies and Matt Daskal who organized the event. We hope to expand the project next year.
· Tax Department - The Tax Office reported to me today that they have collected over $40,000 in parking fines so far this year, well beyond the budgeted amount of $24,000. Congratulations, great job!
5. Board/Commission News:
· I am attaching a copy of correspondence I received from a Wethersfield resident who is very interested in becoming a member of the Tourism Commission. He has many years of experience in the Tourism industry.
6. Council Questions/Answers:
· The DOT has signed the State bid for pavement in place; their pavement milling bid is still in process and our bid for pavement prep work is still in process. Our tentative start date for Phase 1 of the Bond Paving Program (Willow Street and Ridge Road) is the week of July 11th. VHB will be starting work on Ridge Road and Willow Street to begin marking test pit locations for the road work. I may ask you to meet for an one item Special Meeting agenda once the bids are opened for this project.
· Town Clerk Sassano has informed me that the Legislature has adopted SB 410 which adds a $30 surcharge on every recording. If the Governor signs it, the implementation date is July 1, 2005. According to the bill, Towns will keep $3.00 for LOCIP and $1.00 for the Town Clerk’s Office. The rest will go to the State.
· Our recent bond sale with the low interest rate, reduces the projected interest we had budgeted in next year’s budget, giving us a savings of $117,255 for the ’05-’06 budget.
· I signed off on the agreements for the CL&P energy rebates for the Community Center, the Physical Services Building and Webb School. The fire houses are not eligible because there is not enough lighting to meet CL&P’s thresholds for conservation.
7. CRCOG: Nothing this week.
8. COST: Nothing this week.
9. ICMA: Nothing this week.
10. CCM: Nothing this week.
11. METROHARTFORD: Nothing this week.
12. Miscellaneous:
· Town Manager Paul Fetherston of Newington has informed me that Toll Brothers has submitted draft plans for the proposed condominiums at the site of the former Newington Drive-In to the Town of Newington for review. He does not know what Toll Brothers schedule is for submitting a formal application to the Newington TPZ.
· The State Office of Policy and Management has informed us that the General Assembly has passed the Recommended Conservation and Development Policies Plan for Connecticut 2004-2009. For more information, see the attached letter.
· The Connecticut Siting Council has approved the Nextel application to share space on our tower at 23 Kelleher Court. The next steps will be to move the lease through the necessary review process. This item is on your agenda for Monday evening.
