School Board Hears Initial Proposal For Renovations

The board of education Tuesday night was presented with a first view at the planning stages of the proposed Wethersfield High School and Hanmer School projects.
The renovation projects, according to Glenn Yeakel of Friar Associates, were divided into three categories:
- Category I includes code updates, which are required by state or federal law, such as window replacements and electrical upgrades at both schools and partial roof replacement at the high school;
- Category II includes education program enhancements, such as new classrooms and a new gym at the high school; and
- Category III includes site improvements, which include creating additional parking and the relocation of athletic fields.
[/b][/li][/ul]The total cost to renovate the high school would be between $29.6-$32.9 million, while Hanmer renovations would run about $8.9 million. The state would cover between 40 and 50 percent of the total cost of both renovation projects, Yeakel said. The remaining money would have to come from the town in the form of a referendum and, possibly, several other state programs as well as Connecticut Light and Power for energy-conscious measures. The completion of the projects would depend on when funding is secured, with the dates running between 2012 and 2014. Superintendent of Schools Michael Kohlhagen stressed that the school district was mandated to make certain renovations. Regardless, Kohlhagen said that "[t]his will be supported and approved by the public" and that the public's input was encouraged and welcome.....[/color] Really?

$30 Million Plus!!!!! Who are they kidding? "Relocating Athletic Fields"; who are they kidding? where would they be relocated to? would the light towers also be relocated? This new Superintendent is living in a fantasy world.

Last night, the Board of Ed approved a budget of over $48 million, representing a 7.9% increase over last year. The vote was a 6-3 party line vote.
Let's hope that the Council can take a break from pontificating about windmills, global warming and why the Town should be a real estate speculator long enough to make a budget decision that will be fair to the taxpayers. Why can't we emulate Newington's pledge not to exceed a 3% increase?

- Our Adil'd Mayor falls further under the spell of his Vice-Mayor (who has very close ties with the BOE)
- Months ago, Andy had told Bonny he wanted only a 3% increase in the overall budget.
- Will Andy have the guts to push for a major reduction in the BOE's proposed 7.9% budget?
- Will this November see one or two BOE referendums (WHS and-or Hanmer expansions)?
- Will there be another WAR referendum (Wethersfield Agency for Redevelopment) then too?

It probably degenerated into an argument about why the Board expects to get an 8% increase when Bonnie is asking the town side department heads to show how they can make a 20% reduction.
The superintendent will continue to commute from NY in his Mercedes while the library (such as it is and wherever it happens to be located) will now be closed four days a week.
